Frequently Asked Questions
What people often ask, with a straight answer. If it’s not here, see Support or write to us at soporte@truchichat.com
Getting Started
How much does it cost?
It’s free, with no ads. There are no in-app purchases.
Why doesn’t it ask for my phone number?
Because it doesn’t need it. You sign in with a name, any name you like, and you talk to the people you invite. Your number isn’t anywhere in TruchiChat, so no one can find you by it.
How do I find my friends?
There’s no search, and your contacts aren’t read. You create an invitation in Settings and the other person scans its QR code from their TruchiChat, or you send them the code some other way. Each invitation works once and expires after 24 hours.
Does it work between iPhone and Android?
Yes. An iPhone and an Android phone can chat and call each other, with the same features except where each system requires something different: for example, the app lock uses Face ID on iPhone and your fingerprint or face on Android.
Is it on Google Play?
It’s in closed testing, and it will be available to everyone very soon. If you have GrapheneOS or prefer to use Android without Google services, you can already download the Android without Google version.
Phones and Accounts
Can I use it on a computer or a tablet?
No. TruchiChat is phone only: iPhone with iOS 17 or later, and Android 12 or later.
Can I have the same account on two phones?
No: one phone per account. The keys that open your messages are only on that phone, which is why your messages aren’t in any cloud.
What happens if I change phones?
You create a new account on the new phone and invite your contacts again. Chats don’t carry over: your history and keys never leave the old phone, not to iCloud, not to Google, not to a copy of ours. If you want to keep a photo or a file, save it to your phone first.
What if I uninstall the app?
Your conversations are lost. On Android, your account is lost too and you’ll have to create a new one. On iPhone, when you reinstall it, you get your account back but not your chats.
How do I delete my account?
In the app, Settings › Delete Account: it’s deleted on our server and on your phone, and your contacts see in the chat that the account has been deleted. Without the app, write to us. All the details.
What It Doesn’t Have
Are there groups?
No, on purpose: chats are between two people, for privacy. A group is a stored list of who talks to whom, and that’s exactly what we don’t want to have.
Is there a backup?
No. Your history is only on your phone. There’s no copy that can be lost, requested or stolen, but there’s also none that can give you your chats back.
Can I search inside a chat?
No. Searching would require storing an unencrypted index of your history, and we don’t do that.
How big can the things I send be?
A video, up to 100 MB once compressed. A photo, a file or a view once video, up to 50 MB.
Privacy and Security
Can TruchiChat read my messages?
No. They’re encrypted on your phone, and only your contact’s phone has the key to open them. Our server passes them along sealed and deletes anything undelivered after 24 hours.
What does your server know about me?
The name you choose, your profile photo if you set one, which account writes to which and when, and the size of what’s sent. Nothing of what you say. We explain it in full.
Is TruchiChat open source?
No. TruchiChat’s code is private. Your security doesn’t depend on that: your messages are encrypted on your phone with public, well-studied algorithms (X25519, ChaCha20-Poly1305 and Ed25519), the key never leaves it and the server only sees sealed envelopes. And you can check your contact with their safety number.
No outside party has audited TruchiChat.
How do I know I’m talking to the right person?
Compare the safety number by scanning each other’s QR code, ideally in person. If your contact’s key changes, the app warns you. Step by step.
What does the notification show when my phone is locked?
Who’s writing and “New message.” Never the text.
What if someone bothers me?
Block or report them from their contact info. When you block them, the chat is deleted on both phones. A report says who they are, the reason, whatever you write and which chat it’s about; it never sends what’s in the chat.
Who’s behind it?
A small, independent team. No ads and no selling data: the people who make it pay for it.
Want to try it? Free and ad-free, on iPhone and Android.
